LOVE & OBEDIENCE

1. Why does God require us to keep His commandments?
Read: Deuteronomy 5:33
You shall walk in all the ways which the LORD your God has commanded you, that you may live, and that it may be well with you, and that you may prolong your days in the land which you shall possess.

NOTE: That we may live. That it may be well with us. That we may prolong our days.

Read: Luke 11:28
But he said, Yes rather, blessed are they that hear the word of God, and keep it.

NOTE: That we may be blessed.

Read: Proverbs 19:16
He that keeps the commandment keeps his own soul; but he that despises his ways shall die.

NOTE: That we may keep our own soul.

Read: Deuteronomy 28:11-13
11 And the LORD shall make you plenteous in goods, in the fruit of your body, and in the fruit of your cattle, and in the fruit of your ground, in the land which the LORD swore to your fathers to give you. 12 The LORD shall open to you his good treasure, the heaven to give the rain to your land in his season, and to bless all the work of your hand: and you shall lend to many nations, and you shall not borrow. 13 And the LORD shall make you the head, and not the tail; and you shall be above only, and you shall not be beneath; if that you listen to the commandments of the LORD your God, which I command you this day, to observe and to do them.

NOTE: That we may be plenteous in goods, in the fruit of our body, in the fruit of our cattle, in the fruit of our ground, receive the rain in his season, be blessed all the work of our hand, lend to many nations, not borrow, be the head, and not the tail, above, and not beneath.

2. Why is it important for us to keep God's commandments?
Read: John 14:15
If you love me, keep my commandments.

Read: John 14:23-24
23 Jesus answered and said to him, If a man love me, he will keep my words: and my Father will love him, and we will come to him, and make our stayed with him. 24 He that loves me not keeps not my sayings: and the word which you hear is not mine, but the Father's which sent me.

3. A profession of faith only is not enough. Why?
Read: 1 John 2:4
He that said, I know him, and keeps not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

Read: Titus 1:16
They profess that they know God; but in works they deny him, being abominable, and disobedient, and to every good work reprobate.

4. A profession of faith and religious service only are not enough. Why?
Read: Matthew 7:21-23
21 Not every one that said to me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that does the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in your name? and in your name have cast out devils? and in your name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess to them, I never knew you: depart from me, you that work iniquity.

5. Listening to God's word only is not enough. Why?
Read: Rome 2:13
For not the hearers of the law are just before God, but the doers of the law shall be justified.

Read: James 1:22
But be you doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own selves.

Read: Matthew 7:24-27
24 Therefore whoever hears these sayings of mine, and does them, I will liken him to a wise man, which built his house on a rock: 25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell not: for it was founded on a rock. 26 And every one that hears these sayings of mine, and does them not, shall be likened to a foolish man, which built his house on the sand: 27 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds blew, and beat on that house; and it fell: and great was the fall of it.

6. Faith only is not enough. Why?
Read: James 2:17
Even so faith, if it has not works, is dead, being alone.

Read: James 2:19
You believe that there is one God; you do well: the devils also believe, and tremble.

Read: James 2:20-22
20 But will you know, O vain man, that faith without works is dead? 21 Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son on the altar? 22 See you how faith worked with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

Read: James 2:24
You see then how that by works a man is justified, and not by faith only.

7. Good work only is not enough. Why?
Read: Isaiah 64:6
But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags; and we all do fade as a leaf; and our iniquities, like the wind, have taken us away.

Read: Titus 3:5
Not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to his mercy he saved us, by the washing of regeneration, and renewing of the Holy Ghost.

Read: Ephesus 2:8-9
For by grace are you saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: 9 Not of works, lest any man should boast.

8. What is wrong with judging someone based on his good work?
Read: 1 Samuel 16:7
But the LORD said to Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for the LORD sees not as man sees; for man looks on the outward appearance, but the LORD looks on the heart.

Read: Ecclesiastes 12:14
For God shall bring every work into judgment, with every secret thing, whether it be good, or whether it be evil.

Read: Romans 2:16
In the day when God shall judge the secrets of men by Jesus Christ according to my gospel.

Therefore judge nothing before the time, until the Lord come, who both will bring to light the hidden things of darkness, and will make manifest the counsels of the hearts: and then shall every man have praise of God.

Read: Psalm 90:8
You have set our iniquities before you, our secret sins in the light of your countenance.
